Narrow limestone walls of the Avakas Gorge in the Akamas, Cyprus

Akamas, near Agios Georgios

Avakas Gorge

A narrow limestone canyon where the walls close to a few metres apart.

The Avakas Gorge cuts inland from the Akamas coast, narrowing until the walls tower more than thirty metres above a dry riverbed. Walking it means picking a route over boulders and gravel rather than following a path.

Access can be restricted after rockfall or heavy rain, so it is worth checking the current status locally before setting out.

Why visit

  • • The most dramatic short walk in the Paphos region
  • • Cool shade even in high summer
  • • Wild goats, birds and endemic plants along the way

Things to do here

  • Walk to the narrows
  • Photograph the fallen boulder section
  • Combine with Lara Bay

Best time to visit

Spring and autumn. Avoid the gorge entirely during or after heavy rain because of flash-flood and rockfall risk.

Getting there

Drive north past Agios Georgios and follow the dirt track towards the gorge car park, or visit as part of a guided Akamas safari.

Local tips

  • • Closed shoes with grip are essential
  • • Carry water — there is none on the route
  • • Check for closures before driving out
