Boat anchored in the bright turquoise water of the Blue Lagoon, Akamas, Cyprus

Akamas Peninsula

Blue Lagoon

The famous turquoise swimming bay on the Akamas coast, reached by boat from Paphos or Latchi.

The Blue Lagoon sits on the northern side of the Akamas Peninsula, where a shallow limestone shelf turns the water an intense turquoise. There is no beach infrastructure, no bar and no road access for ordinary cars, which is exactly why it still looks the way it does.

Boats anchor offshore and passengers swim straight from the deck. The water is calm on most summer days and the visibility is excellent, so it is also one of the better snorkelling stops on this coast.

Why visit

  • • Some of the clearest water in Cyprus
  • • Long anchored swim stops on almost every cruise
  • • Excellent snorkelling over rock and sand
  • • Completely undeveloped surroundings

Things to do here

  • Swim and snorkel from the boat
  • Combine with a stop at Manolis Bay
  • Photograph the coastline from the water

Best time to visit

May to October, when the sea is warm and the boats run daily. Morning departures usually find calmer water and fewer boats at anchor.

Getting there

Cruise boats leave Paphos harbour and Latchi through the season. Overland, the only route is a rough Akamas track suited to 4x4 vehicles.

Local tips

  • • Bring reef-safe sunscreen and a towel
  • • There is no shade on shore — the boat is your shade
  • • Sea conditions can cancel trips; check the day before
